Awards: Community Welfare Work
Awards: Graphic Pre-press

On Thursday October 29, a group of AITE Community Welfare Work students visited the Northcote studio of 'Arts Project Australia', a dedicated art environment for artists with an intellectual disability.
Arts Project Australia is a not-for-profit incorporated association that is committed to supporting people with disabilities to become practitioners in the visual arts & to promote their work as integral to the broad spectrum of contemporary arts practice.
The Northcote gallery is open to the general public and many pieces of art are sold. Exhibitions are also held at other galleries and in Melbourne city at Federation Square. In addition to assisting the artists financially, this also connects people with disabilities to the general community, which is the philosophy of the Victorian Disability State Plan 2002-2012.
The excursion is connected to units the students are studying in the Diploma of Community Welfare Work: Develop and Promote Effective Communication Techniques; Plan and Conduct Group Activities; and Develop New Networks.
It enabled the students to see, first hand, an Adult Day Placement service in action. They now understand that 'Arts Project' will be a service in a wider network that they may consider for a future client. The students also learnt about art, as a form of communication that is found to be an effective way for disabled people to express themselves.
Excursions, such as this, engage students and connect their studies with real life situations. They also enable our International students to build their knowledge of Melbourne and Australian culture.
