Melbourne’s international students have a place to relax, socialise, study and access a range of support services – The Couch – International Student Centre.
The Couch is coordinated by the Salvation Army and the Australian Federation of International Students and supported by the City of Melbourne.
The centre is a safe and free space for international students in the heart of the city at 69 Bourke Street, Melbourne. The Couch is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5pm to 10pm.
The Couch:
- Provides a safe, non-commercial lounge space for international students in Melbourne ;
- Allows students to connect with support services and get information about housing, employment, counselling, student services, legal aid, and more;
- Provides affordable meals at cost price to students;
- Creates an environment where students can meet each other;
- Is a space where local young people and international students can interact though social activities such as footy nights, movie sessions and other activities held within the centre.
People and Creative City Committee Chair Councillor Jennifer Kanis said the City of Melbourne supported The Couch as a safe space with services to meet the specific needs of international students. ‘It is important that we respond to the needs of our growing international student population and we must work hard to educate, support and inspire them from the moment they arrive in Melbourne,’ Cr Kanis said.
Located at 69 Bourke St Melbourne, The Couch is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5pm-10pm.
