In light of recent attacks on international students and subsequent student protests, as reported in the media, AITE has been proactive in providing support to all of our students.
Debriefing sessions were facilitated by Student Support Services to provide students with an opportunity to express their feelings or concerns in a safe and friendly environment. All students were invited to attend a debriefing and many students participated in the sessions on the 1st and 4th of June 2009.
The students reflected on what had happened, the motivation for the attacks and what they could learn from the incidents. The vast majority of students agreed that the attacks were not racially motivated and more a case of being in the 'wrong place at the wrong time'. Places and areas that are considered 'high risk' were discussed as well as ways to avoid becoming involved in a conflict.
Student Support Services encouraged students to seek their help if they feel threatened or vulnerable, have witnessed a frightening incident or have been involved in an incident or attack. Processing thoughts and feelings reduces the likelihood of developing symptoms of anxiety, stress or depression, feelings of isolation or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The attacks are a reminder to everyone, not just international students, to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times and especially at night.
Any student needing support is encouraged to contact Student Support Services.
