The Minister Assisting the Premier of Victoria on Multicultural Affairs, the Hon. John Pandazopoulos said, "People regard Melbourne and Victoria more generally as the intellectual and academic capital of Australia. "Mr Pandazopoulos was speaking at the 'Ribbon-Cutting' ceremony of the 1st anniversary of the Australian Institute of Technology & Education (AITE), here today.
Many special guests of the industry were invited and attended the ceremony. A wonderful multicultural flavour was commenced by the students of AITE who greeted all guests in their own languages. The cultural program included Balinese dancers, Bollywood Beats by Gowri Dancers of India, Chinese Lion Dance and Japanese Tea Ceremony. The other speakers included: AITE's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Bill Kardamitsis, and the Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC), Mr George Lekakis.
Mr Pandazopoulos said, "Victoria is blessed with a large number of higher education institutions, some old like the University of Melbourne and some built during the education boom of the 60s, like my old university, Monash. And others established during that even greater period of expansion in the 1980 - such as Victoria University - with campuses across the city and western suburbs. Each of them offering something unique to meet the needs of different students."
Mr. Kardamitsis emphasized, that "The mission of the Australian Institute of Technology and Education is to provide educational opportunities that place emphasis on skills and knowledge that will allow the student to adjust through a lifetime of social and technological global change. We acknowledge education as being vital in developing skills needed for a productive society and crucial in promoting the individual's sense of worth, values, and high ethical standards. Today, we celebrate the first anniversary of another of our places of higher education - AITE. The Minister added, "We now have more than 30 registered private providers of higher education, like AITE, in the state, with many situated right here in the city. And we have the highest concentration of international students of any city in the world."
Our goals for the future are defined by our unyielding commitment to provide Australian education qualifications of universal high standards.
AITE is and will continue to be defined by its acceleration of knowledge and skills development through to its graduates and its global achievements. I invite you to view some of these...

"With the rapid educational development of China, India and other nations in the Asia Pacific, we are going to be facing stiff competition. If we are going to hang on to our top spot in education, we have to match more closely the skills that employers and employees need; we have to encourage more public-private partnerships; and we have to create new links with education providers in the developing world - all of which AITE is doing." Mr Pandazopoulos, who is also the Victorian Minister for Tourism, said, "In just six years, since 1999, Victorian tourism has grown by 45 per cent and now contributes more than 10.5 billion dollars annually to our economy. It is set to nearly double in size over the next decade. Because of this it provides great career prospects for Victorians of all ages. I am pleased to see that AITE offers an Advanced Diploma of Tourism Management, "the Minister said. Mr Bill Kardamitsis is a Justice of the Peace, and a former political figure in Australia. Working closely with former Australian Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, Mr Kardamitsis has worked tirelessly to promote multicultural awareness and close international ties between Australia and the rest of the world.
